Anthony\u2019s journey from uncertainty to achievement with the support of a CASA volunteer <\/h2>\n\t\t

Anthony* entered foster care at age 16, accompanied by his younger brother, Mateo*. At the time, Anthony had not attended school for several years. Now 18, and under Extended Jurisdiction to provide ongoing services, Anthony has made tremendous progress thanks to the support of his CASA volunteer, Daryl*.<\/p>\n

Daryl had just been sworn in as a CASA volunteer by CASA Delaware<\/strong> when he was assigned to Anthony and Mateo. As an active-duty military service member, he immediately sparked Anthony\u2019s interest. Anthony had long expressed a desire to join the military after graduation, and this shared connection laid out the foundation for a strong mentorship.<\/p>\n

Understanding Anthony\u2019s academic challenges, Daryl collaborated with the school district to enroll him in the right classes to work toward a high school diploma. When Anthony struggled with math, Daryl advocated for adjustments rather than doubling the workload. The school responded by providing accommodations and assistance that helped Anthony succeed without delaying his graduation.<\/p>\n

Daryl also introduced Anthony to military recruiters to help him explore different branches and learn more about his options. Despite being told by others that he might not be able to pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), Anthony remained determined. He asked for ASVAB study guides for Christmas, and with help from the Office of Child Advocate (OCA) and his foster parent, he received them. Daryl supported Anthony through both his schoolwork and ASVAB preparation. Anthony eventually passed the exam and now hopes to begin basic training after graduation.<\/p>\n

Anthony\u2019s hard work and perseverance were recognized when he was nominated as an exceptional youth by a local youth advisory council. He invited Daryl to attend the award ceremony, a moment that highlighted the strength of their bond and Anthony\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n

In May 2025, Anthony graduated with his high school diploma. While the military remains his primary goal, he is also exploring college options. This shows his maturity and thoughtful approach to planning for the future.<\/p>\n

Anthony continues to reach out to Daryl for guidance when making major life decisions. Daryl always takes the time to listen, understand Anthony\u2019s wishes, and help him make informed choices. Anthony\u2019s story is a powerful example of how a dedicated CASA volunteer can make a lasting impact in a young person\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
