A youth named Kai* lived in a homeless shelter for teens in Alaska. He was disconnected from school and without any consistent adult support. The local school district reached out, because they couldn\u2019t reach anyone responsible for Kai, not even the assigned social worker. He was alone without guidance on how to access support and resources.<\/p>\n<p>Then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaskacasa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alaska CASA<\/a> stepped in and assigned Kai a CASA volunteer named David*. Within just one week of being assigned, David established a trusting relationship with the youth. Through consistent communication and compassionate advocacy, David encouraged Kai to return to school. Kai agreed to attend school again and his progress didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n<p>In less than a month, Kai attended school regularly, interviewed for an internship, had a potential placement identified, and was scheduled for mental health services. The transformation was swift and remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>Three months into the CASA assignment, Kai had a job, improved his grades, secured stable housing, saw a mental health provider regularly, and visited a doctor for the first time in years. With the support of his CASA Volunteer, Kai was finally receiving the services he had needed for so long.<\/p>\n<p>Through advocating for Kai, David saw first-hand the systemic barriers that delayed support for the youth, particularly around Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Rather than accept the status quo, David also began advocating for policy changes within the school district. His efforts aimed not only to help his assigned youth but to improve the system for all students facing similar challenges.<\/p>\n<p>This is the power of a CASA volunteer. It\u2019s not just about one child. It\u2019s about changing lives and transforming systems. Alaska CASA continues to be a beacon of hope, ensuring that even the most vulnerable youth are seen, heard, and supported.<\/p>\n<p>CASA and GAL volunteers make a life-changing difference for children and youth.
