CASA volunteer fosters love of reading with comic books<\/h2>\n\t\t

When Sara* first met Max*, he was withdrawn and depressed. Max was struggling in school and did not like reading. Sara took the time to get to know Max and brought him comic books to read, something which changed his life forever.<\/p>\n

Sara is pleased with her advocacy efforts that helped Max achieve permanency in a stable environment. But she is even prouder of what Max said about her: \u201cMs. Sara taught me how to read!\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t think I actually taught him how to read, but I did teach him how to love reading,\u201d said Sara, who began his infatuation with the written word by introducing him to a classic comic book series.<\/p>\n

Today, Max is 14 and a freshman in high school. He has earned straight As, was accepted into his school\u2019s STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program and was recently elected president of his class. Sara has remained connected to Max for all of the six years he has lived in foster care and is looking forward to his imminent adoption by his foster parents.<\/p>\n
